ORDER OF OLD SCHOOL PLAYERS

In the days after it was revealed that the fabled Reset would probably not happen, it was often said (By Mr. Skullhead, among others) that even if some players felt that their gaming experience had been ruined by the bugmeat epidemics, they could retain the spirit of the game by avoiding the mall and, therefore, the bugmeat altogether. In fact, he insisted, KoL was built around the fundamental principle that one could, if one so desired, play the game entirely without interaction between players at all – without the mall, the flea market, or chat. Taking this principle to heart, Tudlow started a thread in the Discussion forum stating that he was creating a new character, who would play the game as many had intended it to be played (or, perhaps, the way it would be after a total reset). HudsonHawk, whom he called a "hardcore KoL" character, set out with a set of rules that included avoidance of most economic avenues, rejection of all gifts, and initially, nonparticipation in chat (including trivia and raffles). He found the game newly challenging and rewarding, and posted his thoughts on the forums; many players took to the idea, and began their own new characters according to similar rules. A clan of these hardcore players quickly sprang up, to facilitate trade between participators and to foster the burgeoning community.

At first, there was some disparity between those who envisioned this new style of play as a way to intentionally increase the challenge of a comparatively easy game, and those who sought to recreate of a real or imagined Past of Loathing. The former retained the name "hardcore", and the latter dubbed themselves "Old School"; though the clan takes the latter name, the members have decided to incorporate both philosophies.

Here are the guidelines of the Order Of Old School Players:

The Spirit of the Order
(Your rules may vary)

1. No mall.
2. No flea market.
3. No items-for-meat or meat-for-items trades with new schoolers. Barter only, and only barter items for those of similar autosell value.
4. No recieving of gifts or prizes from non-old school players (this includes items, meat and buffs). Get a gift? Get rid of it, ASAP.
5. No games/contests.
6. There is no rule 6.
7. NO buying, selling, or trading quest items. Ever.
8. Old School forgets what 8 is for, so does nothing.
9. Can only join clans consisting solely of other old school characters. Can create your own clan, but cannot accept new school members.
10. PvP is allowable, if you want a REAL challenge.
