History of Loathing

As of March 2006, The KoL Historians have dived back into this amazing project and should be held accountable for all errors or offences. From here on, the italics are by our conspicuous cabal. For now, we will be using Trog Dor's structure, and no matter what we change, we will always be striving to meet his standards.

We miss you Trog Dor, and thank you for this gift to the KoL community. - Bete Noire (#180553) & TavernWench (#358045)

Trog's original greeting: Below is the history of the online RPG parody Kingdom of Loathing. It gleaned from the Announcements and Trivial Updates pages, the forums, and the personal records of some players. Please msg me in-game (#33932) or on the forums for additions, corrections, and suggestions. Thanks are due up-front to Jick and Mr. Skullhead for a) this game b) not deleting the hundreds of old topics that have aided me greatly in this. A 'thank you' too to the folks who have filled in details and dates for me. Thanks to Chubbles and Qrrbrbirlbel for giving me a whole load of stuff to find out about and add. Special shout-out to Gigs for hosting this originally and BoozerBear for doing it currently.

  • I'm still working on this, give me time to add in everything (hyperlinks, more dates, better formatting, etc).
  • Most dates are approximate.
  • Plaintext is Jick's writing, italics is mine.

    April 1
Instead of 30 turns a day, there will be 40...

And now, for the part that's going to piss you all off. I'm adding a "full" attribute, similar to the drunkenness. Once you're full, you can't eat anymore food until the next day.

    April 6
Pimonkey cracks itemdesc.php to discover how the item table is set up.

    April 8
New area, new stores, new tradeskill, new items, blah blah blah. Hit Points are now implemented, too.

    April 12
NOTICE: In a few days, I'm going to start autodeleting player accounts after 30 days of inactivity.

    April 15
There's a contest posted in the forums.

    April 19
There's a (smallish) new zone in the Forest (Whitey's Grove). It's tougher than the cemetary, but easier than the hippy camp.

    April 21
You now have the option to disable inventory images -- I encourage you to do so, especially if you've been playing for a while. It'll make the inventory page load a little faster, and help to conserve bandwidth.

    April 22
The moons, Ronald and Grimace, are added but don't actually do anything for a few more days.

Pimonkey draws up some rules and guidelines for the KoL forums. They (nor any other set) aren ever adopted.

    April 25
Please note that there is now a listing fee of 100 Meat to sell an item on the Flea Market. This should cut down on some of the useless clutter.

Made it impossible to use html or javascript in a familiar's name.

    April 27
Fixed the new password encryption code to squash the can't-change-my-password bug.

    April 28
Meatsmithing now works the same as cooking and cocktailcrafting.

    April 29
Fixed the bug whereby players weren't getting their extra adventures.

    April 30
The Daily Dungeon is now in place. It's a randomly-generated zone that refreshes once a day.

    May 2003

    May 4
The Clan Hall and the Hall of Records have been revamped. Enjoy the wonderfulness.

    Added the clan gym.

    May 8
Fixed clan hall bug that prevented purchased clan furniture from showing up.

Rollover is around 3am EST during this time period. It is later moved up some 3 hours at an unknown date.

    May 12
Pimonkey and accordion thief find a bug that creates infinite meat in the clan coffers. Pimonkey explains the hack in this forum post.

    May 13
The "Forgot Password" link is now functional again -- forgotten passwords can be reset using your activation code.

    May 14
Cobb's Knob is deeper! (Added the Harem and King's Chamber.)

Added Insanely Spicy Enchanted Burritos to the game.

    May 16
Jick starts accepting donations. Inconnu (#37) is the first player to donate; three others also donate that first day.

    May 20
Accordion thief kicks off his Scavenger Hunt. 1st place got the Big Ol' Trophy, 2nd was the Consolation Ribbon.

    May 31
As a result of the recent clan bug, I'm going to need to wipe all of the current clan records and start over. This will happen on Wednesday night. Please get everything that you want to keep out of your goodies hoard, and formulate plans for reforming old clans. I've restored peoples' clan memberships and status as well as my most recent backups will allow me to.

    June 2003

    Sometime in June
    TheBub starts clan [AzN]

    June 5
Cobb's Knob is even deeper! (Cobb's Knob Laboratory is added.)

The clan reset went (almost) as planned.

    June 9
There are 100 registered members on the forums.

    June 12
Added the Moxious Manuever to Moxie classes, which uses 1MP to make an attack which substitutes Moxie for Strongness in the new combat system.

    June 13
Check out the Mall of Loathing in Seaside Town, for hot Player-owned store action. Now with eXtreme recycled graphics! Spikey is the first one to buy a store.

    June 15
Nietzsche starts the KoL Playa Pics website. It is eventually passed on to Pimonkey and then in late summer of 2004 it was handed over to Thor and Adra.

    June 16
Made it so everything carbonated adds MP.

In an effort to clean up the clan page, and to conserve a little bit of bandwidth, the activity log has been moved to its own page.

Usable clan furniture has been moved to the "clan gym," and can now be used for more than one Adventure at a time.

    June 17
The Kingdom of Loathing Store is now up and running. Buy groovy merchandise, and be the envy of all your friends. There are only a few items up for sale right now, but there will be more (including class-specific T-Shirts) in the coming days.

    June 18
Inventory is now divided up into categories.

All non-normal messages are now deleted after 2 weeks. This includes clan item, player store, flea market, and PvP messages.

    June 19
Ascension is proposed for the first time.

    Sometime between June 19 - July 10th
You can now "sell all but one" of a given item in your inventory.

Arbitrary amounts of meat can now be attached to player messages.

Regular attacks and Moxious Manuevers now do a lot more damage to monsters whose level is lower than yours. Any monster who's way below you can now pretty much always be taken out in one hit, which is as I feel it should be.

Healing items, mp items, and stat boosters are now in the food/drinks inventory section as well as the miscellaneous section.

Healing items, mp items, and stat boosters can now be used in quantity.

    June 25
My desktop machine is now officially dead, so updates for the next week or two will involve even more recycled graphics than usual.

Also, I put the Voluntary Level-Reduction Booth in Seaside Town. Check my post in The Forums for more details.

    June 27
That bug whereby you gained power by going down one level (or more than one) is fixed now, by the way.

By popular request, the maximum turn limit has been raised from 120 (40 turns * 3 days) to 200 (50 turns * 4 days.)

    June 30
A couple of new areas have been opened up in the Mountains. Oh, and the Detective Skull now does something. Not much, but something.
