History of Loathing

Resurrection!
As of March 2006, The KoL Historians have dived back into this amazing project and should be held accountable for all errors or offences. From here on, the italics are by our conspicuous cabal. For now, we will be using Trog Dor's structure, and no matter what we change, we will always be striving to meet his standards.

We miss you Trog Dor, and thank you for this gift to the KoL community. - Bete Noire (#180553) & TavernWench (#358045)

FAQ

Trog's original greeting: Below is the history of the online RPG parody Kingdom of Loathing. It gleaned from the Announcements and Trivial Updates pages, the forums, and the personal records of some players. Please msg me in-game (#33932) or on the forums for additions, corrections, and suggestions. Thanks are due up-front to Jick and Mr. Skullhead for a) this game b) not deleting the hundreds of old topics that have aided me greatly in this. A 'thank you' too to the folks who have filled in details and dates for me. Thanks to Chubbles and Qrrbrbirlbel for giving me a whole load of stuff to find out about and add. Special shout-out to Gigs for hosting this originally and BoozerBear for doing it currently.

Disclaimers:

  • I'm still working on this, give me time to add in everything (hyperlinks, more dates, better formatting, etc).
  • Most dates are approximate.
  • Plaintext is Jick's writing, italics is mine.
    Enjoy.

At this point in time, KoL (with donations) is just breaking even.

Chat channels are coded as well as some basic channel commands (/whois, /channels, /who). Their full implementaion doesn't happen until February 3rd.

    January 14
The command /listen is added to let you be in more than one channel at a time.

    January 16
    There's a new council quest.

    January 20
The chat now filters out 'shouting' by replacing it with [shouting].

    January 25
I always said I'd implement character gender the first time somebody complained about it. Somebody complained about it, so now there's gender. It has no effects other than cosmetic ones. If you are one of "the ladies," you'll have to go into your profile and specify female if you want your gender to update. Even if it's already set to Female, just resubmit it and your picture will update.

    January 23
A new PvP system has been rolled out. More options, more meaningful rewards and losses. I gave everybody their Hippy stones back and reset everybody's win/loss record. Have fun beating each other senseless.

    January 18
ATTENTION! A set of Policies has been drawn up. Please read them, and note the message beneath the Log In button.

    February 2004

    February 3
Chat channels have been implemented. Everyone starts in the 'newbie' channel, but you can open up the 'normal' and 'trade' channels by visiting the Altar on the Right Side of the Tracks. Use the chat help command (/?) for information on how to move between channels.

    February 5
AT's no longer need the Rock 'n Roll Legend equipped to be able to buff 15 advs. worth.

    February 6
The chat pane now has a macro system for creating shortcuts to frequently-used commands. The "chat pane" section of the documentation has been fleshed out, so check there for details.

    February 9
Those on your Ignore List are now unable to make trade offers and similarly, you are unable to buff them.

    February 12
You can now search for players by level and whether or not they PvP.

    February 20
Jick retires use of the name 'El Perezoso' from KoL. An imposter later re-creates the name in-game during November.

    February 22
SpaceMonkey's 'Girls of Loathing' clan calendar is added.

    February 25
Alright, there've been a few things added/changed since my last announcement. Let's see how many I can remember:

There is now a "clan" chat channel. Being accepted into a clan grants you access, and when you're in there, you're talking to members of your clan ONLY. The Lounge channel was also created around this time.

There have been some changes to the way the Mall works, largely to reduce database strain -- stores are now paginated, but are searchable on the "search the mall" page. You can also now mark stores as your Favorites, and they'll always show up at the top of the Mall list, above the top 10 advertisers.

You now have the ability to save messages into a "saved messages" folder. Again, in an effort to reduce database traffic, any read messages that are more than 2 weeks old will be automatically deleted, unless they are moved to this folder. Which is not really a folder, but it's like a folder. This will start happening in a week or two.

    March 2
You no longer gain stats when somebody PvP attacks you and you win.

    March 5
A mention on the SomethingAwful.com Forum brings in 180 new accounts in 24 hours.

    March 8
I'm having some more memory put into the server late tonight, so it'll be down briefly, some time between 4am and 6am EST.

    March 15
KoLCon (this weekend, March 20-21, in the Phoenix, AZ area,) is just around the corner. So if you're planning on attending, please check in in the forums and let us know.

    March 15
Inventory limits were removed, eliminating the need for boxes and containers. Jick writes, "I wanted you to be fighting the monsters, not the game mechanics."

    March 17
Happy St. Patrick's day. Ten-leaf clovers for everybody.

    Sometime between March 19-April 15
I made some minor fixes to the player store and clan log pages, which should make them a little less slow-tastic. I also divided the clan log into item activity, and Meat contributions.

Made it so the Turtle Tamer Skill "Wisdom of the Elder Tortoises" actually does something.

Fixed a bug whereby nobody was getting any leprechauns anymore.

Changed the temporary PvP rules such that above 15, you may only attack players that are of a greater level than your level minus two.

Stat gains from monsters no longer cap out with level 100 monsters. Now they cap out with level 200 monsters. March 19
The chat now times out if it doesn't register a keystroke for 10 minutes. This is a little bit annoying, but it should help conserve some server resources.

    March 21
A couple of changes -- announcements are now shown after login, and will soon disappear from the login screen. In a related development, you can now decide not to enter the chat after you log in.

Also, KoLCon was a big success. Check it out!

The chat now times out at 15 minutes instead of 10.

There are 500 registered members on the forums.

    March 22
Okay, as of the turn rollover tonight, there are 13337 active player accounts. w00t!

    March 24
Okay, due to popular demand, I've added the "Last Adventure" link to the character pane. It allows you to repeat your last adventure, no matter where you are -- skills, inventory, wherever. Notably missing are the Shore and the Barrel, but I'll make these work with it as soon as I can.

Oh, in Compact Mode, you click on "Adv" to use this feature.

    March 30
    LittleFluffy.com links to KoL.
